Roof Survey

Surveyors get excited when they find a nice fruiting body, this example was dead, but had been caused by a long standing roof leak coupled with totally inadequate roof void ventilation. An old slate roof was recovered with heavier concrete tiles, strengthening was carried out, but no attempt made to provide ventilation. Zinc parapet gutters were too large and expansion/contraction caused splits, resulting in prolonged leaks. The roof timbers were subject to a massive outbreak of two varieties of wet rot, leaving many timbers weakened. Wet rot does not spread like dry rot, but can be a catalyst for dry rot if the roof were to become damp again.
