Renovation of Grade II Listed Farmhouse
An extensive renovation of a Grade II listed farmhouse.
Wenderton House is a substantial Grade II-listed farmhouse, set in open countryside and surrounded by functioning farmland. The property, once part of Wenderton Manor (no longer extant), was historically under the ownership of illustrious Kent names such as the Oxenden family and, later, the Conynghams. The house itself has early-17th century origins but was substantially altered and re-fronted in 1835.
This was an involved project, encompassing various fabric repairs & remedial works; wholesale replacement of building services; and thermal efficiency improvements, including internal wall and roof space insulation.
Unsympathetic 20th century features were removed and replaced. Conker’s Gavril Postnikov designed a replacement open string staircase and series of chimneypieces to evoke the character of the late-Georgian and Regency periods.
Conker Conservation Ltd were retained to carry out the entire design and procurement phases, obtain consents, and undertake the contract administration. The outcomes of this project have been very successful; the building has been put back into good order and its historic character consolidated.
Despite initial concerns on whether it would even be practicable to heat such a large property effectively, the thermal comfort within the house has already markedly improved following the insulation works, overhauling/draughtstripping windows, and commissioning the new heating system.
